Dear Folks,
Whatever the news you have heard of Haiti, here’s a story to remind you of how much more there is to tell.
This is about Barbarah Cenat. We introduced her when she was in the Forestry Mentoring program where she earned high marks and great respect. When she finished in 2022, we decided to support her in getting an agriculture degree.
Her first year of study was delayed because the political/social situation was so fraught that schools were shut. The University of Fondwa finally started up in mid January and Barbarah enrolled and got to work. Classes are held six days a week. To get there she leaves her home near the Jacmel Road down the mountain from the CODEP Depot. She has to hire a moto (local motorcycles which are the common transportation option) and ride about seven kilometers up the mountain road to campus.
I can report that she has finished the course work for the first year — only four more years to go! She is taking final exams now, and classes for the next semester start in November. There is no delayed start this time.
We continue to support her. We pay about $1000 for her annual tuition and another $500 for books and for the moto transportation. It’s the best possible investment! We expect that when she graduates she will work under the tutelage of Mdm Enez for a few years. She will most certainly become an Animator and continue the important tradition of women holding leadership roles in CODEP.
