Folks,

Our CODEP partners live and work in the very steep mountains of Haiti. It is easy to underestimate what such a vertical environment demands.

A good example of the challenge is in the CODEP nursery system. We have over 40 nurseries where hundreds of thousands of seedlings are cultivated for planting every May and November. The nurseries are very simple. (Note: one of our goals is to equip them better.)

A major challenge is literally to find good space for them. They have to be tucked into small bits of land edged by sharply rising banks or set up on the sloping land as best as can be done.

We are always saying that planting trees is so much more than plopping a seedling into the ground. Who would have thought it could require three-dimensional Tetris skills?
