Folks,

I am the caretaker for a guest house here in Leogane where American doctors stay when they come to work on maternal health issues. In return, I am allowed to live here. It’s a good arrangement.

I’ll be talking more about the facility this year as we have planted a massive garden out back. But today’s story is about the hallway in the “dorm” area.

I have a little friend who has recently mastered roller skating. He inspired me to buy a pair for myself in the States in January. Imagine the squeals and shrieks as we both try to skate down the hallway. I don’t know when I’ve laughed so much.

When I catch my breath, I am struck by the gift of children, of giggling, of the sheer joy of crashing around in roller skates. Life here can be very dark at times and the recent months have been among the toughest I’ve experienced. I should have been roller skating with my buddy all along.
